Self-aware AIs are a common trope in science fiction and (depending on who you talk to) may be close to reality. But being electronic and mechanical, AIs have no sex. But could they have gender? If so, how is it determined? And by whom? The programmer? The people it interacts with? The AI? What ramifications does this have for writing fiction with AIs?
